Dement is the primary University liaison with federal, state, and local elected officials as well as government agencies and regional community organizations. He serves as the University’s chief lobbyist and advocate, and as a political and policy advisor to campus leadership on government and community issues.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Monmouth-Ocean Development Council, 180 Turning Lives Around, the Long Branch Chamber of Commerce, and the Monmouth County Workforce Development Board. He also serves on the board of the Eastern Monmouth Area Chamber of Commerce Educational Foundation, where he is a former chair, and is a past president and a current member of the Rotary Club of Long Branch.
